*It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.*

And so this is what P&P is all about, the pursuit of a marriage in early Nineteenth century England.

Elizabeth Bennet (Jennifer Ehle) and Fitzwilliam Darcy (Colin Firth) are the main focus. However, the story is so well constructed that this focus is not overwhelming. The other Bennet sisters are also on the prowl for husbands, as are many of the other local girls. The society functions are full of entertaining characters and there's always Mr. Collins (a cousin of the Bennets) and Lady Catherine de Bourgh to interfere in the course of events.

There are a couple of authors that come to mind that have written sequels to the original Jane Austen novel. One is Rebecca Ann Collins who has written four novels so far continuing the stories of Darcy, Elizabeth, Jane and Bingley. You can visit here website by clicking here. Another author is Emma Tennant who has written Pemberley or Pride & Prejudice Continued. Personally, although I admire what these authors have tried to do, I'm not sure that anyone could write a sequel to the book - better left to the imagination of the reader, in my humble opinion.

P&P is available to buy on video or on DVD (which is a double DVD set - and v good it is too!). There's also the book The Making of Pride & Prejudice, which is very good and has some great pictures. What's more it has a whole chapter interview with Colin Firth!
