I’m not sure if the Leather Island sketch came in the first or second half, so I’ll mention it here. This was a combination of Bergerac and Lovejoy, involved an island the size of a postage stamp (literally) and found the two characters investigating the mysterious death of a young girl (who even with an axe in her face, was still a honey!). Again, try and have a listen to “The Mel and Sue Thing” for more of these two characters.

So, the second half found us involved in Sue’s dream/nightmare and found Virginia Wade giving Sue advice on her health and happiness. Mel’s accent was truly bizarre and Sue said there would be a wake for it after the show. The advice involved exercise and going on holiday, leading into PE Department’s Martin and Derrick and a Spanish package holiday.

PE Department was always a winner on BBC London (or London Live as it was when it first started) and it was good to see Martin and Derrick back, in their netball vests. Basically, this was an extension of the UST between the two characters and led to them singing “Just The Way You Are” to each other.

The Spanish holiday saw Mel (Jackie) and Sue (Sam) as reps on the coach to the resort, looking after all the “naughty nutters” that had come on their hols. They dispensed invaluable information such as “Spain is a Spanish country. The language spoken here is English and the food is very much curry, egg and chips. It will be a 29 hour journey to our resort, Los Apartmentos Half-Builtos. The toilet is currently closed for food preparation. We do also have paella flavoured contraceptives available.” The VCR on board the coach was showing a Spanish/Argentinean soap opera, which Mel and Sue acted out and involved some rather suspect stick-on moustaches. That was quite funny.

Bizarrely (I can’t remember exactly how this happened), Sue gets hit by a giant hotdog and then ends up doing a death scene, in which her foot trembles violently, as in the finest tradition of death scenes. She ends up in Hades on an Afterlife holiday for the over 30s.

Mel finally wakes up after dreaming that Sue had died and finds that Sue is not next to her in bed. She panics, bless her, then Sue emerges from the shower. “Well, it worked in Dallas.”

So, that was pretty much it really after an hour and a half of fun and frolics, which I really enjoyed, despite some of it being older material that I’d heard/seen before. I know some people thought that it wasn’t as good a show as it could have been, but I for one was pleased to see Mel and Sue back on stage. Keep it live, ladies!! Good evening.
